"This wasn't the first time the Mariners have seen a game end with Ken Griffey Jr. getting his bat on a ball.
But it was the first occasion in recent memory in which the Mariners began a winning rally because their manager flapped both his gums and arms with equal vehemence. History will note that manager Don Wakamatsu received his first major-league ejection an inning before his team rallied for three runs in the ninth for a stunning 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Wakamatsu getting tossed, on the day of his 100th career victory, seemed to ignite a Seattle lineup that had spent much of the previous eight frames looking poised to lose for the sixth consecutive time.

"In hindsight, it sparked us," said Mike Sweeney, who opened the ninth with a single off Toronto closer Kevin Gregg. "Wak is our captain, our leader. We told him after the game he was going to get a beer shower for getting tossed for the first time in his career."
A crowd of 20,452 at Safeco Field, which seemed to consist mostly of Blue Jays fans for the first eight innings, roared to life in the at-bats that followed. Jose Lopez added a single to right after Sweeney, followed by a huge walk to Milton Bradley with the count full that loaded the bases.
Casey Kotchman hit a ball grand-slam distance but pulled it several feet wide of the right-field foul pole. But he laid off some tough pitches and worked a walk that got the Mariners within a run.

Josh Bard then tied it with a sacrifice fly to left, and Griffey, pinch-hitting for Josh Wilson, roped a 2-1 pitch down the right-field line for the game-winning single.
It was an emotional moment for Griffey, batting just .183 when he came up and dogged by questions about whether he'll retire in-season. The Griffey saga has taken on a life of its own and dominated all talk surrounding a last-place team that had lost 15 of 18 coming in.

"We're probably not going to go through a two-week period like this again," Sweeney said. "Considering how hard it's been and yet we've stayed so close together."

Behind all the years of practice and all the hours of glory waits that inexorable terror of living without the game."
Ken Griffey Jr. is hardly the first superstar to endeavor to stave off career mortality. In fact, it often turns melancholy for great athletes in their waning days. And for their fans, too, who must reconcile the desire to keep watching their heroes with the realization that the old guy is a dim facsimile of what made him a hero in the first place.

Rarely, of course, is the dilemma framed quite as starkly as it was with Griffey this past week. Already flailing at the plate, Griffey was rocked by the published revelation that he had been sleeping during a recent game. The image almost instantaneously replaced Willie Mays stumbling in the outfield during the 1973 World Series as the new meme for an athlete hanging on beyond his time.
And now everyone waits and wonders what Griffey will do next: Stick it out, or hang it up? Each option has its virtues and its drawbacks.

If Griffey keeps playing, fans get to continue absorbing the joy of Griffey's aura at the ballpark, which for many is enough. Any contribution at the plate is just a bonus. But there's also the pain of watching an athlete whose calling card was his exuberant yet effortless grace, when those qualities have been all but stifled by the ravages of time.
If he quits, Griffey can leave before the sweet memories of his prime become more obscured by the current struggles. Yet the downside to that scenario is obvious: Once he walks away, there is no coming back.

There has been a lot of talk about whether Ken Griffey Jr. and Don Wakamatsu had stopped speaking to each other over the final week or so of the slugger's tenure with the Mariners.
Today, we tried to press Wakamatsu a little more about the extent of his conversations with Griffey. We wrote earlier about the Fox Sports column by Ken Rosenthal in which sources were telling him that Wakamatsu had pressured Griffey to retire in a conversation the two had. Wakamatsu has denied that.
He told us today that he and Griffey did have some conversations right around the time a decision was made that Griffey would not play as much going forward. You'll remember that, on the last multi-city road trip, right after the napping controversy in mid-May, Mike Sweeney began playing more and more.

But Griffey still got the occasional start, once at Tampa Bay, then again for two games in Oakland. In Seattle, a week ago Sunday, he started as well.
Then, it stopped. Two games versus the Tigers went by, with two off days in there as well, then three in Anaheim. Griffey did not play in any of those. Then, in the middle game versus the Angels, with right hander Jered Weaver on the mound and Sweeney hobbled with an Achillies problem, Griffey still sat out.
All this time, a source has told me, he and Wakamatsu did not speak. The source told me yesterday that Griffey was upset about the fact Wakamatsu was not playing him and that the two hadn't spoken in over a week.

So, I put the question to Wakamatsu today. Had he spoken to Griffey over the past week?
"Not in the last week or so,'' he said. "Ken and I talked at different points, really, in honor of him, just with the situation. I think any manager, when you start to decrease someone's playing time, yes we did have conversations.''
But not in the past week or so, when Griffey's playing time was reduced from the occasional start to just one pinch-hit appearance per week.

Wakamatsu doesn't want to get into details about his prior conversations with Griffey and what was told to him about the playing time reductions that were coming.
He insists that he would never try to pressure a player to retire.
"That's not my place,'' he said. "His name in this game is much bigger than mine will ever be. And to honor Ken, I would never do that. That's something that, the organization, myself, (we thought) that was something that Ken had to decide on his own.''

So, anyhow, that's where we are with that.
As for Griffey's future role with the team, Mariners spokesman Randy Adamack told me within the hour that nothing concrete has been decided upon yet. The team is still trying to work with Griffey to see where he'd best fit in, but as of today, there is no time frame set nor has a job been designated.
That doesn't mean that Griffey's agent, Brian Goldberg, jumped the gun today when he stated that Griffey owuld be coming back this year in an unspecified capacity. (UPDATE: 7:36 p.m. Actually, Goldberg just clarified that he never told AP in the initial report that Griffey would return this year. It's now looking more like next year). It's unspecified because nobody knows at the moment. But yes, the M's would like him back in the fold as quickly as possible.

One other thing I wanted to clarify because I was a bit confused during an unscheduled appearance on today's Mitch in the Morning Show on KJR AM 950. I said during the broadcast that GM Jack Zduriencik had been involved in phone conversations with Goldberg yesterday.
That's not true. The pair never spoke. I misunderstood something I'd heard earlier in the day. Zduriencik did put in a call to Griffey yesterday, but it was not returned.
Mariners president Chuck Armstrong has had several conversations with Goldberg in recent weeks. But yesterday, the first time they spoke was about 3 p.m. when the agent phoned to tell him of Griffey's retirement.

More recently I added Lunar Glides+ 3 (yellow tread with black upper, touch of aqua) and replaced my worn-out Frees. And my running followed, going from the treadmill to the road, from 3 miles to 10.
I'm not special: running and running shoes are cool right now. But a random fashion trend this is not. These latest shoes are a result of 40 years of sneaker culture, an eon of human evolution and the eureka moment of a track-and-field star turned Nike designer named Tobie Hatfield.

A few years ago, the military began analyzing the shapes of recruits’ feet. Injuries during basic training were rampant, and military authorities hoped that by fitting soldiers with running shoes designed for their foot types, injury rates would drop. Trainees obediently began clambering onto a high-tech light table with a mirror beneath it, designed to help outline a subject’s foot. Evaluators cl * ified the recruits as having high, normal or low arches, and they p * ed out running shoes accordingly.

Many of us have had a similar experience. For decades, coaches and shoe salesmen have visually * essed runners’ foot types to recommend footwear. Runners with high arches have been directed toward soft, well-cushioned shoes, since it’s thought that high arches prevent adequate pronation, or the inward motion of your foot and ankle as you run. Pronation dissipates some of the forces generated by each stride. Flat-footed, low-arched runners, who tend to over-pronate, have typically been told to try sturdy “motion control” shoes with firm midsoles and Teutonic support features, while runners with normal arches are offered neutral shoes (often called “stability” shoes by the companies that make and categorize them).

But as the military prepared to invest large sums in more arch-diagnosing light tables, someone thought to ask if the practice of * igning running shoes by foot shape actually worked. The approach was entrenched in the sports world and widely accepted. But did it actually reduce injuries? Military researchers checked the scientific literature and found that no studies had been completed that answered that question, so eventually they decided they would have to mount their own. They began fitting thousands of recruits in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps with either the “right” shoes for their feet or stability shoes.

Over the course of three large studies, the most recent of which was published last month in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers found almost no correlation at all between wearing the proper running shoes and avoiding injury. Injury rates were high among all the runners, but they were highest among the soldiers who had received shoes designed specifically for their foot types. If anything, wearing the “right” shoes for their particular foot shape had increased trainees’ chances of being hurt.

Scientific rumblings about whether running shoes deliver on their promises have been growing louder in recent years. In 2008, an influential review article in The British Journal of Sports Medicine concluded that sports-medicine specialists should stop recommending running shoes based on a person’s foot posture. No scientific evidence supported the practice, the authors pointed out, concluding that “the true effects” of today’s running shoes “on the health and performance of distance runners remain unknown.”

More recently, a study published online in late June in The British Journal of Sports Medicine produced results similar to those in the military experiments, this time using experienced distance runners as subjects. For the study, 81 women were cl * ified according to their foot postures, a more comprehensive measure of foot type than arch shape. About half of the runners received shoes designated by the shoe companies as appropriate for their particular foot stance (underpronators were given cushiony shoes, overpronators motion-control shoes and so on). The rest received shoes at random. All of the women started a 13-week, half-marathon training program. By the end, about a third had missed training days because of pain, with a majority of the hurt runners wearing shoes specifically designed for their foot postures. The lesson of the newest studies is obvious if perhaps disconcerting to those of us planning to invest in new running shoes this summer. “You can’t simply look at foot type as a basis for buying a running shoe,” says Dr. Bruce H. Jones, the manager of the Injury Prevention Program for the United States Army’s Public Health Command and senior author of the military studies. The widespread belief that flat-footed, overpronating runners need motion-control shoes and that high-arched, underpronating runners will benefit from well-cushioned pairs is quite simply, he adds, “a myth.”

The mythology grew and persists, however, in large part because “in certain aspects, the shoes do work,” says Michael Ryan, Ph.D., the lead author of the study of female half-marathoners and currently a postdoctoral fellow in the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Motion-control shoes, for instance, do control motion, he says. Biomechanical studies of runners on treadmills repeatedly have proved that pronation is significantly reduced in runners who wear motion-control shoes.

The problem is that “no one knows whether pronation is really the underlying issue,” Dr. Jones says. Few scientific studies have examined how or even if over- or underpronation contributes to running injuries. “There is so much that we still don’t understand about the biomechanics of the lower extremities,” Dr. Jones concludes.

For now, if you’re heading out to buy new running shoes, plan to be your own best advocate. “If a salesperson says you need robust motion-control shoes, ask to try on a few pairs of neutral or stability shoes, too,” Mr. Ryan says. “Go outside and run around the block” in each pair. “If you feel any pain or discomfort, that’s your first veto.” Hand back those shoes. Pop Shop | Wood Wood Meets Vice in Vienna
Throw together Wood Wood, Vice and Pool in a sentence and it sounds like a debauched time. And that just may be the idea behind the WWXV pop-up shop that opened in Vienna this past weekend. The Danish clothing label Wood Wood and Vice Austria magazine have teamed up with Pool Gallery of Berlin for a mishmash of street, art and fashion. Karl-Oskar Olsen: Vice Austria approached us in our Berlin shop, saying they would like to do a temporary shop and were looking for fashion partners. We saw it as a great opportunity to join forces with Vice. We have a lot in common, but they are dirtier; you could say we’re a bit square.

Jon Sanders: It has been a very good experience to bounce ideas and collaborate with an equal partner as opposed to design a product for a big company. We wanted to add some depth and rock ‘n’ roll spirit, so we asked Pool Gallery if they would like to join with the Peter Beste exhibition. Olsen: We are currently working on a project with the toy company Lego, where we are curating an exhibit with four internationally known artists. We’re looking to open one more Wood Wood store in Europe within the next three or four months, and we will also release three new shoe collaborations next season with Asics, Adidas and another major label. Sandusky’s Trial Begins With Graphic Testimony
When Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State football * istant coach, retired from Joe Paterno’s staff in 1999, he devoted himself full time to his charity, which tried to help children from disadvantaged families and broken homes.
On Monday, prosecutors opening their * ual abuse case against Sandusky told jurors that Sandusky kept a private list of boys the charity was helping. That list, they suggested, amounted to his own sort of scouting report on potential targets for him to abuse, complete with asterisks next to some of the names and notations about their hair color, shoe size, whether they had parents and other details.
Some of those targets may ultimately have become victims, prosecutors claimed on Monday, * ually abused as a consequence of “systemized behavior by a serial abuser.”

And on the opening day of Sandusky’s trial, one of his accusers stepped into the public for the first time, taking the witness stand at the Centre County Courthouse and offering several hours of methodically disturbing, often graphic accounts of * ual * ault at the hands of the man who for decades had been Paterno’s top lieutenant. In his testimony, the man, the first of an expected eight accusers to take the stand, said he had been recommended to Sandusky’s charity, the Second Mile, by a school guidance counselor because of problems he was having at home. In mid-1997, Sandusky took a liking to him, he said, playing basketball, racquetball and other sports with him after school, introducing him to Penn State football players like LaVar Arrington and taking him to bowl games in Florida and Texas.

Sandusky bought the boy golf clubs, snowboards and hockey equipment, and invited him to stand on the sidelines at Penn State home games, the man said.

In his opening statement to the jury, Sandusky’s lawyer, Joseph Amendola, said that Sandusky had a long history of helping children and that he and his wife, who were unable to bear children, had formally adopted six of them. “Jerry loves kids so much that he does things most of us wouldn’t think of doing,” Amendola said.

Amendola on Monday had the first accuser read from a number of letters that Sandusky wrote to the boy urging him to focus on his studies and sports. Amendola raised questions about why the accuser had brought a lawyer with him when speaking with the police and the grand jury during the long investigation into Sandusky’s conduct, suggesting that perhaps he had a financial incentive to manufacture his tale of abuse.

The man said he was unaware if the agreement he had with his lawyer — who was recommended by his father — included contingency fees or a promise to pursue a civil action against Sandusky or the university. The accuser said he had not paid the lawyer.

The accuser said that one time, Tom Bradley, another former * istant coach at Penn State, walked into the shower when he and Sandusky were together. Bradley ultimately took over as interim head coach after Paterno’s dismissal last fall.

On a Friday night before spring break in 2001, Mike McQueary, then a graduate * istant football coach at Penn State, was at home watching the movie “Rudy,” the heartwarming if somewhat sappy true account of a scrappy football player at Notre Dame who, against all odds, gets into a game.
The movie so inspired McQueary, a quarterback at Penn State in the mid-1990s, that he jumped off the sofa and drove to the football team’s facilities to do some work. He never made it to his office to review playbooks and game videos.

Instead, he stopped first at his locker to drop off a pair of sneakers. There, McQueary had an encounter that changed his life and devastatingly damaged the reputation of the university’s football program, one almost as storied as Notre Dame’s.
McQueary’s story of that encounter has no heroes, and on Tuesday, under oath, McQueary told that story to the jury here sitting in judgment of Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State * istant coach charged with being a serial pedophile.
As he entered the locker room, McQueary said, he heard a “skin-on-skin slapping sound.” Once inside, he went to his locker just next to the door, turned to look over his right shoulder and saw in a mirror Sandusky, the famed former defensive guru for Coach Joe Paterno, pinning a young boy in a prone position against a wall in the shower.

He then “looked directly into the shower and saw the coach’s arms wrapped around the boy’s midsection,” McQueary said.
Startled and disturbed, McQueary said he then slammed his locker door to surprise Sandusky. When he looked back in the shower, the coach and boy were standing a few feet apart looking at him. McQueary made eye contact with them and left quickly.
McQueary could be the most important prosecution witness in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s case against Sandusky: he offers an eyewitness account of a * ual * ault, perhaps a rape, and he claims to have told people of the attack in the hours and days after he saw it. On Tuesday, as he had a number of times under oath before, McQueary said he alerted Paterno the next day, then told university officials, including the athletic director and the administrator in charge of overseeing the university’s campus police department.

“I made sure he knew it was * ual and wrong,” McQueary said of his conversation with Paterno the morning after the shower incident. “There was no doubt.”
A recent court filing by prosecutors in their perjury case against the two former senior university officials that McQueary said he told of the attack suggested that the university might have had a formal file on Sandusky, one that included earlier allegations or suspicions of * ual misconduct on his part.

Before McQueary testified, the prosecution’s lead witnesses had been two men who said they were victims of Sandusky. Defense lawyers sought to portray them as opportunists looking to make money off a high-profile case.

McQueary sounded less sure of himself under cross-examination by Karl Rominger, one of Sandusky’s lawyers. Persistently, Rominger got McQueary to admit there were inconsistencies in his statements on Tuesday and those he made to investigators and in other courts.

After being asked why he provided so many potential ages, he shot back: “If we want to argue 9, 10, 11, 12, he was having * with a minor.”
McQueary said he never went to the police directly, but ultimately spoke with Gary Schultz, a university vice president in charge of the campus police whom Paterno had contacted. That, in his mind, was the equivalent of speaking to the police.

McQueary was not the only target of aggressive defense work Tuesday. Over an often uncomfortable hour, Joseph Amendola, Sandusky’s lead lawyer, cross-examined an 18-year-old man, the second accuser to be called.
The young man was in grade school when he met Sandusky, initially through Sandusky’s charity, he said. He described how that relationship became * ually abusive, and he said Sandusky had * aulted him at Sandusky’s home, among other places.

Amendola asked repeatedly why the young man failed to tell child service workers and the police early in the investigation that Sandusky had performed oral * on him, and why he later gave investigators a variety of numbers for how often it happened. The man said he was uncomfortable retelling the events to strangers.
“I didn’t want to tell them the truth, but I didn’t really have a choice,” he said. “I may have white-lied to cover embarr * ment.”
Occasionally breaking into tears, the man told prosecutors that after Sandusky started abusing him, his performance in school slipped, and he started wetting his bed and getting into fights. When he tried to distance himself from the coach, Sandusky har * ed him and his family, he said.
